OFF RECORD ZONES
We power places where AI/wearable recording isn't allowed.
Mass market AI wearables are giving rise to nonconsensual recording in everyday spaces,
but together we create spaces where consent is respected
1Consent Drift
We are drifting towards a society where anywhere you go your face, voice, and private conversations can be secretly captured by smart glasses, AI pendants, and more.
2Everyone is a Target
Already children are being scanned at public parks, pickup artists are recording interactions for clout, and spaces like clinics, that have an obligation to privacy, are not yet equipped to counter the coming rise of nonconsensual AI wearable recording.
3Off Record Zones
This is why we are launching Off Record Zones, where consent is respected and expected. We are partnerning with organizations that value consent, businesses that protect their patrons, events that elevate human-to-human connection, and companies that know privacy is not the cost of innovation.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

What Is Secondhand Surveillance ?
We've been here before where bystanders are put at risk by the actions of others. Secondhand smoke was once normal, but individuals and communities pushed back. Now it is illegal to smoke in high risk spaces like on airplanes. No-smoking zones are common so individual choices do not lead to collective harm. Like secondhand smoke, secondhand surveillance puts bystanders at risk based on the action of others.
What Can We Do About It?
Local governments and venues are banning products that make it easy to record people with out permission. In Australia local governments have restricted these products in public pools, gyms, childcare centers, libraries and town halls. In the UK, the pub chain Wetherspoons restricts smart glasses recording inside their establishments showing the immediate power business owners have alongside widespread government action.

"People should not have to surrender their privacy simply because someone nearby chooses to wear an AI recording device. We created smoke-free spaces to protect people from secondhand smoke. Now we need spaces that protect us from secondhand surveillance. Off Record Zones give everyday people a way to act now and establish consent as the expectation, not the exception."
To foster presence and human-to-human connection the 10-year anniversary celebration of AJL is the first registered Off Record Zone Event.

Protect People
"Companies have a responsibility to respect human rights, which means identifying and preventing foreseeable harm before products reach the market. Safety must be a condition of launch, not a patch applied after the harm. Companies must ensure safety throughout the lifecycle of their products, and governments must close the legal gaps that allow covert recording and other harms to go unchallenged."
Mona Sinha, CEO of Equality Now

Support Creatives
"Voice actors have spent years fighting for a simple principle: no one should be able to take your voice and use it without your consent. Everyone deserves that same protection."
Tim Friedlander, President and Co-Founder of NAVA

Build Community
All Tech Is Human is a non-profit organization that has intentionally brought together a diverse range of individuals and organizations across civil society, government, and industry that value responsible AI. Their Responsible Tech Summit; all-day conferenc held at The Times Center in Manhattan is the first registered New York City Off Record Zone Event.
